Aretusa

Aretusa, la ninfa che scampò alle attenzioni di Alfeo, figlio di Oceano, rifugiandosi sull'isola di Ortigia, a Siracusa. Siracusa è la più bella di tutte le città. Occupa una posizione inespugnabile ed è molto bella da qualsiasi direzione ci si arrivi, specie dal mare. Possiede due porti quasi racchiusi e abbracciati dagli edifici della città. Questi porti hanno ingressi diversi, ma che si congiungono e confluiscono all’altra estremità. Nel punto di contatto, la parte della città chiamata l’isola, separata da un braccio di mare, è però riunita e collegata al resto da uno stretto ponte.

Arethusa, the nymph who escaped the attention of Alphaeus, son of Oceanus, taking refuge on the island of Ortigia, in Syracuse. Syracuse is the most beautiful of all cities. It occupies an impregnable position and is very beautiful from any direction you arrive, especially from the sea. It has two ports almost enclosed and embraced by the city buildings. These ports have different entrances, but which join and converge on the other end. At the point of contact, the part of the city called the island, separated by an arm of the sea, is however united and connected to the rest by a narrow bridge.
